The competition runs from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017 and entries received after this date will not be accepted.

The competition is open to entrants worldwide over the age of 18 years, except employees of Rhino Africa and the photography competition’s partners.  

The Grand Prize winner will receive a safari experience for two people valued at $25,000. Quarterly Prize winners will receive a pair of Swarovski binoculars.

Entrants can submit one image per day.

Entrants are only able to enter for the current quarter. Once the Quarterly winners are announced, the following category will be open for submissions.

The judges decision is final and no correspondence pertaining to the selection process and decision will be entertained. Each image will be evaluated on artistic/visual appeal, extent to which the photograph captures the essence of the category, originality and creativity.

Entrants may enter photographs for all four categories.

Submitted photographs should be in JPEG format and at least 1900 pixels wide for a horizontal image and 1,900 pixels tall for a vertical image.

Digital manipulation that distorts the reality of the images will not be allowed. Only basic enhancements such as sharpening, contrast adjustment, or simple cropping will be allowed.

Quarterly winners and runner ups will be announced at the end of each quarter. The Grand Prize winner will be announced in January 2018. All winners will be notified via email.  

Each photograph submitted must be the original and unpublished work of the entrant who must also be the copyright owner.

There is no entry fee for Africa’s Photographer of the Year.

Yes. After submitting an image, entrants will receive an email confirming that their photograph has been received.

Yes. Submissions that have made it through the approval process will appear on Africa’s Photographer of the Year’s website under Current Entries and the Gallery within 12 working hours. Photographs may be used by Africa’s Photographer of the Year partners both online and offline.

Entrants should include their name, the destinations where the photograph was taken and a caption explaining the photograph.

A jury panel will select the Quarterly winners and runner ups from the images featured in the gallery. These winners and runner ups will automatically advance to the Grand Prize category. The Grand Prize winner will be selected by most popular vote.

Quarterly winners, runner ups and the Grand Prize winner will be notified via email. They will also be featured in a quarterly newsletter and announced on Africa’s Photographer of the Year’s website and Rhino Africa’s social media channels.

Entrants submitted photographs may not retain his/her name or watermark.

Photographs from both digital and analogue cameras will be allowed.

Yes, black and white photographs can be submitted.

Photographer of the Year partners have non-exclusive rights to all photograph submissions and we retain the ability to publish these images for commercial purposes.  

Yes, if your photograph is selected we may ask for this.

Areas within a 100km radius of Cape Town will be accepted. These include: Langebaan, Tulbagh, Ceres, Worcester, Franschhoek, Caledon, Hermanus and Stellenbosch.

Yes, cellphone camera submissions are allowed, but please be aware that they may be rejected, due to low quality.
