Grand Prize Winner

Clement Kiragu
Kenya

Its very rare to find a 5-cheetah coalition surviving in the wild these days, at least, I have never seen one. There is this powerful coalition that is taking Maasai Mara by storm. The five males have one leader that is always dominant in everything. I had the pleasure of watching them for two weeks. They have a very unique hunting strategy as well; quite opposite to the stalking and sprint strategy we see in most cheetahs.

Cape Town

Alexander Hill

Canada

Alexander Hill captured the winning image from Signal Hill. It was taken in September 2016, as the sun set on Table Mountain. The judges loved the vibrant spring scene, and thought this photograph of Cape Town was unique and different from the usual Cape Town sunset pictures. Alexander walks away with the quarterly prize of the Swarovski CL Pocket 10x25 Binoculars, valued at $800.

Concrete wave breakers or Dolosse, which is a South African invention, protects a small peaceful Cape Town boat harbour from the tides of the vast two oceans which meet at Cape Town.

Kim Bouchier

This image was taken from the beach on Woodbridge Island, Cape Town. It was a lovely evening with people walking along the water's edge enjoying the scenery and fresh air.

Samir Abdul
South Africa

I set up my tripod and camera at The V&A Waterfront with the intention of photographing the mist and clouds over Table Mountain. The clouds and mist started clearing and the sun peeked out behind the clouds. The wonderful morning light covered the clouds, Table Mountain and created a perfect reflection on the water.

Full Moon night in Sandy Cove, with a slumbering ocean and a sleepy distant Camps Bay at the foot of Lion's Head.

Big Five

Anna-Mart Kruger

Namibia

Anna-Mart Kruger captured this image while on a game drive at Zimaga Private Game Reserve. Once they had spotted the White Rhino mother and calf, they approached slowly on foot (with the safari vehicle close by!). As the rhinos were moving, the dust was kicked up, and caught in the fading sunlight, prompting Anna-Mart to caption the photo "Dusty Sunset". Anna-Mart walks away with the quarterly prize of the Swarovski CL Pocket 10x25 Binoculars, valued at $800.

April - June Winner

Alistair Swartz
South Africa

After noticing an elephant charging a tree in the distance, Alistair and his group waited for a few minute until the elephant had moved off. It was then that they saw this tiny leopard cub peering out of the hollowed out branch.

Hanspeter Lang
Switzerland

An unlikey encounter between giants - Hanspeter manage to capture this image while on a game drive at Aquila Private Game Reserve.

Simon Smith
South Africa

From the Bhejane hide in Imfolozi Game reserve, I spent some time patiently watching herds of elephant come and go from the waterhole. This allowed me to get close to these magnificent animals with minimal disturbance. After a careless splash of mud across its body, this youngster looked directly at me, allowing me to capture this head-on image.

“We were lucky enough to see this young white rhino and his mom trotting through the brush. A slow shutter and steady hands made a sharp pan.” Taken in the Kruger National Park

Africa Through my Lens

Dieter Mendzigall

Germany

"This photo was taken in April, during a four week tour through Namibia. It was taken near Hardap, on the edge of the Kalahari desert. We were lying on the sand taking photos, until the sun was very low on the horizon. I love the soft contrasts and beautiful colours of this photograph."

Jane Pearce

"This photo was taken at Phinda Game Reserve in South Africa. It was on my first afternoon game drive, and the first animal I photographed! The sun was setting, which cast this beautiful light. It was a magic moment!"

Les Ellingham
United Kingdom

"Leaving Satara camp in the Kruger National Park at first light we came across a pride of lions enjoying the warmth of the road. The light was still low so I concentrated on portrait shots as the sun rose and its first light glanced across the face of this magnificent lion."

Mike Sutherland
South Africa

"Taken from inside a flat bottomed boat near Little Vumbura in the Okavango Delta. We came across a small herd of Red Lechwe who were acting strange. After the herd panicked and sprung over the water in front of us, we spotted a leopard in the distance."

Doug Croft
United States

"This photo was taken while on safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa.  This young cheetah was the last in a coalition of four that were headed across the plain.  He got distracted and was left behind.  Once he noticed that the others were gone, he raced to catch up with them and I caught him nicely with a slow-shutter pan."
